The open water swimming season got off to a flying start for Thanet Swim Clubʼs Josh Dunk when he took part in the first event of the Speedo Open Water Series at Dorney Lake in Windsor on Sunday 27th May.
Having obtained special permission from the organisers to take part as he was underage for the event, Josh took on a field of 200 swimmers and triathletes in the 1500m swim to come home in 2nd place in 20.44 and with only 40 seconds separating him and the first placed swimmer.
The water temperature had jumped a massive 5 degrees in the previous week making the water a positively balmy 19 degrees on the day. A number of swimmers including Josh, discarded their wetsuits for the swim and made the most of the unusually temperate water.
The biggest cheer of the day however was undoubtedly reserved for twice World Champion and Olympic Silver medallist at the 10k Open Water event, Keri-Anne Payne who was the race starter for the swim. Keri-Anne was also waiting at the finish line to welcome home the swimmers and Josh was delighted to be interviewed by her following his swim. She told Josh how impressed she was with his swim and that she hoped to see him with the Team GB Open Water swimmers in the future.
