3 British National Modern Biathlon Champions!

Six swimmers from Thanet Swim Club participated in the British National Modern Biathlon Championships held at Wyndley Leisure Centre in Sutton Coldfield on Sunday 13th May 2012.

The Modern Biathlon comprises of swim followed by a run; the distance is determined by age category of the competitor. Points are awarded for each discipline and final positions are decided by the total number of points achieved after both disciplines.

In older age group Ben Pond representing Chatham and ClarendonGrammar Schoolwon the 200m swim recording a time under 2 minutes in 1.59.86 which gave him a bit of a buffer for the run. However, Ben produced a very composed and controlled 1500m run and smashed his personal best in a time of 4.37.72 to finish 4th in the run. Ben was deservedly crowned British National Modern Biathlon Champion.

In the age category below, Thanet Swim Club had Harry Bradford, Jamie O’Connor and Alexander Wilmshurst all competing as individuals but also as a Team representing Dane Court Grammar School.

After the 100m swim Alexander was in first place with a time of 56.84, Jamie in 2nd with 57.15 and Harry 4th breaking the one minute barrier in 59.82. But whilst it was expected that all three boys would do well in the swim the 1500m run was going to be a different story because they were now competing against dedicated runners!

The boys needn’t have worried because Alex finished 3rd in the run in a time of 4.39.88 and both Harry and Jamie comfortably beat their personal bests in 5.12 and 5.21 respectively.

So now Thanet Swim Club had double individual champions with Alex stepping up onto the podium as British National Modern Biathlon Champion with Jamie 9th and Harry 10th. Also, theDane Court Team were overall Team Champion beating Dorset Pentathletes into second and Whitgift School into third!

Three British National Champions from the same swimming squad!

In the girl’s event Lauren Joy from Senior Squad and Beth Williams from Junior Squad were also competing.

Lauren had a flying start in the 200m swim finishing 2nd but had to dig deep in the 1500m run setting a new personal best in under 6 minutes. Lauren finished 18th overall.

Beth had also qualified for these championships through Regional qualifiers but after the run was in 18th place. However, after a strong 50m swim catapulted up the table to 8th overall just missing out on a medal.

UK School Games

Backed by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, the Sainsbury’s 2012 School Games was a multi-sport event for 1,600 elite young athletes. The Games took place from 6-9 May 2012 with the Olympic Stadium, Velodrome and Aquatics Centre at the Olympic Park amongLondonvenues hosting the competition.

The competing athletes were representing 8 UK zones, England North, South, East and Central, Scotland North West and South East,Wales and Ireland. Katie and Kyri were representing England East. As the next host nation of the Olympics 2016,Brazil also sent a team adding an even more exciting edge to the competition.

The atmosphere in the Aquatics Centre was electric as more and more parents, supporters and class after class of school children, given the day off school to be inspired, made their way to their seats. The noise was deafening as Sarah Price roused the crowd with ‘The louder you cheer, the faster they swim!’

Katie was first to swim her 100 backstroke, coming 4th in a new PB of 1.05.54. Kyri’s 200 breaststroke gave him a 7th place in 2.36.10. Katie swam on her PB for the 4×100 freestyle relay to help England East to a bronze medal but they were beaten into 4th place in the 4×200 freestyle relay.

Kyri was close to his PB in the 100 breaststroke only just missing out on a medal. We will shall skip past Katie’s 200IM where she was DQ ‘d for her back to breast turn but she reprieved herself by leading off the Girl’s medley relay team to another bronze.

Although by this time some of the swimmers were showing some tiredness from the busy itinerary over the 4-day games, Kyri bucked the trend by swimming his best swim of the games in the Boys’ medley relay. He recorded a time of 1.10.87 in the 100 breaststroke leg, helping his team to a 4th place finish.

In the evening all 1,600 athletes who competed in the Games headed over to the Basketball Arena to enjoy a fantastic closing ceremony with performances from the Cover Drive ( No. 1 hit with ‘Twilight’) and BGT gymnastic troupe Spellbound and messages of support from Prince Harry and David Beckham. A great time was had by all !!!

New Committee

At the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 9th May a new committee was elected for the following 12 months. Details of the new committee can be found on our Committee Page under ‘About’.

However, the new committee wanted to thank and recognise the unstinting work our outgoing Chairman, Dasos Papa-Adams, has undertaken over the last 3 years in the role.

There is great deal a work that the committee need to undertake if we are to maintain the ambitions of this special club and the committee will need the support of parents. So don’t be surprised if we come asking!!!

In addition, meetings from the Committee Meetings will be published monthly on our website.

Kent County Championship 2012 – HOT OFF THE PRESS

“Following the de-brief of the 2012 Kent County Championships and a subsequent meeting of the Swimming Committee it has been decided that entries to the 2013 Kent County Championships will only be considered if submitted entry times have been achieved or have bettered the qualifying time standard at a meet licensed at level 1,2,3,4.

It is inevitable that this standard would be introduced although the Swimming Committee has tried to avoid this for a number of years.  Clubs were warned at the coaches/administrators meeting in September 2011.”

As consequence, we are now considering licensing our Club Championship in September. More details to follow.
