2012…the year to make a Big Splash for charity!

There are a whole host of reasons to get excited during 2012, with the London Olympic Games making its way to the capital this summer, and the world’s biggest fundraising swim coming to a pool near you this April!

To get in on the action, the Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief, which is part of the Swimathon Weekend, is a great reason to get in the pool with friends and family and raise money for worthwhile causes at the same time.  Taking place in 650 pools from 27 to 29 April 2012, swimming a mile for Sport Relief really can make a difference to people living incredibly tough lives here in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries.

Over the last year, money raised by Sport Relief has provided access to clean water for almost 52,000 people living in slums.  Just £5 could buy new clothes for a child living on the streets of Nepal and £1000 could transform the lives of a whole community living in the slums of Kenya by giving them permanent access to clean water.  But it is not just overseas where your money makes a difference, as here in the UK just £10 could give expert advice to a person living with dementia to improve their quality of life.

By signing up, you’ll also receive the Big Splash Mile Swimfit training plan to prepare you for the challenge. If you want to go to further lengths for charity, there’s also the chance to tackle the Swimathon 2.5k, 5k or Team 5k challenges to raise vital funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Do something amazing today and sign up to the Big Splash Mile for Sport Relief at www.swimathon.org

The IoS team are taking part and wondered if your teaching staff would like to take up the challenge too.

We have made the attached posters for you to use within the team and challenge the children and/or swimming families.

National Schools Biathlon Championship

The National Schools Biathlon Championships were held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on Sunday 25th March. The Modern Biathlon consists of a swim then run, with a break between the swim and the run. The distances in both events depend on the Year Group of the competitor with competitors in years 7 and below swimming 50m, over year 7 swimming 100m.

Thanet Junior squad swimmer Maisie Macartney took top place in the swim, and finished 2nd overall, whilst Cameron Macrae finished 10th overall.

Thanet Senior squad swimmer Alexander Wilmshurst won the National Schools Champion for Year 8 boys and also picked up best swim in his age group with Jamie O’Connor finishing in 2nd place in the swim and 12th overall.  Ben Pond took 2nd in the swim and finished 7th overall. Thanet swimmers Alex Kirkpatrick finished 18th overall, Oscar Macartney 24th and Adam Lynch 43rd in their respective age groups.

Hannah Denny, year 7 girls, finished 3rd in the swim and 16th overall when combined with the run. In the Year 9 girls, Molly Dawson swam a Personal Best in her swim and finished 45th overall. In the Year 10 girls, Lauren Joy finished 2nd in the swim and 24th overall.

Furthermore, the Year 8 Dane Court Grammar Boys are the National School Team Champions with the team consisting of Thanet Swimmers Alex Wilmshurst, Jamie O’Connor and Harry Bradford.

Pictures from the event can be found in our Gallery.

All swimmers had to qualify first from the County heats and then the Regional semi-finals to reach this stage of the competition which in itself is a remarkable achievement given schools are competing from right across the country.

Thanet Swimmers Maisie McCartney and Alex Wilmshurst along with Thanet Swimmers Dane Court Year 8 boys team Harry Bradford, Jamie O’Connor and Alex have now secured a place at the National Championships in Birmingham to be held on the 13th May. They will be joined by Thanet swimmers Beth Williams  from the Junior Squad,  Ben Pond and Lauren Joy who all qualified for the National Championships at the South East Regional finals
